My unpopular opinion is that I think Peppa Pig is hilarious
So much so that I have ranked the top 5 funniest Peppa Pig episodes.
Peppa Pig often gets a bad rap among the parenting community — but why?
She's simply a little piglet growing up, navigating friendships and learning alongside her family in humble surroundings.
I have to admit, as a new mum I would often find myself nodding along as other mums at Playcentre would tear Peppa Pig a new asshole, stating that she was rude, bitchy, lacked manners, and was just generally annoying and whiny. While I nodded along, I would occasionally chime in with comments like, “We are a Peppa-free household”, or “If we have to have screentime, it would never be Peppa Pig,”.
It doesn’t help the stigma around Peppa that publications like The Independent, The Guardian and The Telegraph have published scathing critiques of my little porky friend over the years.
But then, I became a mum to a toddler, and Peppa Pig became her first obsession, bringing her so much happiness. How could I deny my little cherub one of life’s simple joys?
I know exactly how Peppa found her way into our home. In the mornings, and honestly still today, I often turn on the TV while I tackle my morning chores — emptying the dishwasher, making my husband's lunch, and starting a load of washing. I almost exclusively put it on Nick Jr, as I have personal beef with Andy who so regularly shows his mug on Cbeebies.
It just so happens that Nick Jr.'s morning lineup includes an hour or so of back-to-back Peppa Pig episodes, perfectly timed to coincide with when I rely on screen time to get through the morning.
At first, my toddler wasn't particularly interested in Peppa Pig. She'd watch for a bit and then wander off to play with her toys. Gradually, she started enjoying longer stretches of the show. Then came the smile when the theme song played. Now, she squeals with delight and oinks along with Peppa and her family as they introduce each episode. I reluctantly admit, her oinking is bloody cute.
So, it's safe to say I've watched my fair share of Peppa Pig by now.
I’m almost a bit of a Peppa aficionado. I know the funny bits in episodes, I know which are boring, I can recite some lines.
Which brings me to the point of this essay: My top five funniest Peppa Pig episodes, as ranked by yours truly.
Funniest Peppa Pig Episodes
#5: The New House (Season 4, Episode 2)
There is a recurring joke throughout the Peppa Pig series where Mr. Wolf references Big Bad Wolf of The Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood.
So it’s a bit of a laugh when Mr Wolf examines Daddy Pig’s house (as dad’s do) and asks what it’s made out of. Daddy Pig quickly replies “It’s made of bricks, don’t even think about it!”
#4 Night Animals (Season 4, Episode 35)
In Night Animals, Peppa and George stay up late at Grandpa and Granny Pig’s house to help hunt for slugs and snails. While they’re out near the chicken coop, Mr Fox strolls past and calls out “Hola, Grandpa Pig, putting your chickens to bed, are you?”
Grandpa Pig is quick to reply: “Oh yes. Nice and cozy in the henhouse.” - implying that Mr Fox shouldn’t even think about it.
#3 Miss Rabbit's Taxi (Season 5, Episode 3)
Miss Rabbit takes Peppa and the family in her taxi to Granny and Grandpa Pig's house to drop off their shopping. While Miss Rabbit is chatting away you get a glimpse of her metre, they flick away to the backseat and then flick back seconds later and the price of her metre has tripled!
#2: Desert Island (Season 4, Episode 28)
In the episode Desert Island, Grampy Rabbit, Grandpa Pig and Grandad Dog head off to sail the seas when their ship sinks and they find themselves stranded on a deserted island.
“Anyone else miss cheese?” declares Grampy Rabbit, after hilariously scoffing his face with their only source of food left. “I’m going to draw a line in the sand everytime I think of cheese.”
By the time they’re rescued a few moments later he has over 60 lines drawn in the sand in front of him.
#1 Whistling (Season 3, Episode 28)
Peppa tries to learn how to whistle after she realises that seemingly everyone but her can do it. She decides that her best friend Suzy Sheep probably won’t be able to whistle either so calls her up on the phone to ask if she can. At first, Suzy doesn’t think she can whistle but then gives it a go and does a beauty of a whistle. Shocked, Peppa simply hangs up the phone without saying a word and freeze wide eye for a couple of seconds. Honestly comedy GOLD!
These five episodes are just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many more funny moments that happen throughout the series. These little treasures that happen throughout are part of the reason why my toddler can 100% continue to watch Peppa Pig. It’s harmless fun!
I don't *hate* Peppa, but I do think daddy pig is picked on more than necessary. I'm sure there's an episode where he falls off a boat and they drive away laughing while he tries to catch up to climb back aboard 😂
Also, why don't you like Andy?
